A parent has died or I am taking on care

Use the right agency, legal and support routes for bereavement, kinship or another caring arrangement.

  1. Explain the actual caring change

Ask Services Australia about the relevant payments and evidence. This situation may need a different route from separation.

Read the guide: Bereavement, kinship and other caring arrangements
  2. Check legal authority and estate processes

Payment eligibility, guardianship, court orders and estate authority are separate. Seek qualified advice before signing or distributing assets.

Read the guide: Tax, superannuation, wills and estates
  3. Ask for support for children and yourself

Ask a GP, school or grief service about wellbeing support. Practical help can ease immediate pressure.

Read the guide: Children's wellbeing and parenting support
  4. Review disability, unpaid-caring and local help

Check each service's conditions and local availability. Ask about accessible appointments and communication.
