Legal and safety
Update records after separation
Work through agency, financial and family records with safety checks beside each step.
Begin with safety and your actual circumstances
Separation can affect payments, child support, contact details and access to shared records. If another person monitors you or might react to a change, get specialist support before updating accounts. For domestic, family or sexual violence support, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 using a safe contact method.
Keep track of what has actually changed, such as your relationship, living arrangement, child care, income or address. Do not wait for a divorce to ask about separation reporting. Different services have different requirements and time limits.
Separate linked records before changing sensitive details
Contact Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support about separating linked records before changing sensitive information such as an address or bank details. Ask about safe contact and mail arrangements, and what the other person may see.
A nominee or representative may have access to updates. Ending that arrangement can trigger a notification. Leaving a shared Medicare card can also be visible to others on it. Ask the agency and a specialist worker about the safest sequence rather than making blanket account changes.
Use the correct separation process
For an ordinary Centrelink separation form, your former partner does not need to complete their section. Remaining under the same roof uses a different process. Tell the agency if asking your former partner for information would create a safety risk; an exception may apply.
An update does not cover every service or record. Check the instructions for the payment or assessment involved and ask what must be reported separately. Use the reporting changes guide for deadlines and the child support guide for care and assessment changes.
Gather useful documents only when safe
If accessible, identify your identity documents, bank statements, loans, tax records, property information, insurance and superannuation. A list of assets, debts, regular bills and income can help a lawyer or financial counsellor explain your options. Get advice before signing agreements or moving jointly held money.
If identity documents are missing or controlled by another person, ask Services Australia about alternative ways to prove identity. Do not put yourself at risk trying to retrieve them.
Check family and financial records step by step
Consider which banks, insurers, school or childcare services and health providers need updated information. Ask about safe communication, authorised contacts and any relevant court orders. Review wills and beneficiaries with appropriate advice; each organisation has its own process.
If safe, keep the date of each update, any receipt or reference number, the information supplied and the next action. A changed record is not the same as a successful payment claim. Ask the responsible agency to confirm outstanding forms, decisions and review options.
