Rent Assistance and concession cards

Check help with housing costs, card eligibility and local discounts after your family circumstances change.

Ask whether Rent Assistance applies

Rent Assistance is an extra payment linked to eligible rent or accommodation costs and an eligible Services Australia payment. It is generally assessed automatically with the relevant payment, rather than through a separate Rent Assistance claim.

Eligible routes include Parenting Payment and FTB Part A above the base rate, alongside other payments. The rent amount and accommodation arrangement matter. A lease, boarding arrangement, shared housing or government housing can be treated differently. Paying housing costs does not by itself guarantee assistance.

Update evidence and payment details

Tell Services Australia about changed rent, accommodation and household circumstances. Provide a lease or rent certificate if requested, and keep copies of submitted documents. Ask how rent is assessed if you share costs, board with relatives or have no settled address.

If the new address is sensitive, ask the agency to separate linked records before changing it. Housing support applications and changes to Centrelink records are separate tasks. Ask a housing service for urgent help if accommodation is unsafe or you may lose it.

Check the card that fits your circumstances

Parenting Payment Single normally provides a Pensioner Concession Card automatically. Some single principal carers receiving other specified payments also qualify. A Health Care Card can arise through eligible payments, including qualifying FTB circumstances.

If you do not receive an automatic card, the Low Income Health Care Card is a separately claimed pathway with income and residence tests. Ask about card eligibility if earnings increase or a payment ends; a payment change does not always mean every concession stops immediately.

Use your state and local options

A card can help with medicines and other costs, but discounts are not uniform. Energy, water, transport, school costs and public dental care have state, territory or provider rules. Some need a separate application, residence evidence or the child's name on the card.

Use your state page, then confirm the exact concession with the administering service. For shared care, check whether the child is listed and which household can claim. If bills are overdue, ask about hardship support instead of relying on a future concession to clear the debt.
