Other circumstances
Visas, residency and settlement support
Find qualified help with visa and residency questions, including family violence and access to support.
Get advice about your actual visa
Visa conditions, residence rules and eligibility for payments are separate. Do not assume that being a single parent creates a visa pathway or that all temporary visa holders can claim the same support. Ask a qualified migration adviser or legal service about your particular visa and circumstances.
Home Affairs has family-violence provisions for specified visa circumstances. These provisions do not apply to every visa and do not guarantee a visa grant. Read the current official route and seek specialist help before relying on an exception.
Plan safe contact with services
If a sponsor or partner controls documents, money, email or online accounts, tell the service before changing details. Ask what can be communicated safely and what evidence may be needed. Avoid sending private documents through a shared account if that may expose your plans.
Ask about interpreters and confidential legal help. Do not delay seeking advice simply because documents are inaccessible. A specialist can explain options without requiring you to confront a partner.
Check support system by system
Centrelink residence requirements and waiting periods differ from Medicare access, school arrangements and state assistance. Ask each agency which rules apply and whether any exemption is relevant. Being able to use one service does not prove eligibility for another.
Settlement services may offer practical help with local systems, language and referrals. Check provider coverage and eligibility. This website does not interpret every visa subclass or decide migration status.
